THE GLTCH - An interactive immersive art exhibition focused on impermanence; the art of uncertainty.

MY ROLE

Producer
Artist

SUMMARY

This was a production where the Content Development program and Motion Creative program at Hyper Island merged together to create an event and exhibition open to the public. We were 87 people divided into 14 teams, that created 1 installation each.

We had a Creative Production team that consisted of 14 people, one from each team. I was Producer in this team and we had the overall responsibility for the full event; Production, Marketing & Partnership.
As Producer for the entire exhibition I had the main responsibility, on top of creating one of the installations.

BRIEF

Create and build an emotive, purposeful and thought-provoking Immersive Experience journey using inventive intentions, tech or analogue, and performative storytelling, aimed to re-inspire, reform and re-ignite humanity. The aim was to let visitors that enter the experience walk away with a valuable lesson or reminder of how fragile and impermanent life can be and what humans can/should do about it.

GOALS

1.
To reach the public through marketing and attract at least 500 people to come to the exhibition.

3.
To receive several partnerships; catering, equipment, PR etc.

2.
Tell a cohesive and intelligible story through all the installations and the entire production.

4.
Have a structured and well organized event that will run smoothly from start to finish.

APPROACH

To be able to balance my time as producer and artist was something that I new was going to be a struggle from the get go, so i made sure to create a time plan for myself first thing to make sure I had the time to contribute to both. However the majority of my time was spend on the work that went in to being a Producer.

CREATIVE PRODUCTION TEAM

To structure the work of the creative production team we divide us into three teams; Production team, Marketing team & Partnership team. Each team had separate responsibility areas and a project manager was selected for each team to streamline the work and our communication paths.
Since each team worked separately I made sure to keep a constant communication to make sure we followed the same path. We had meetings in the full team at least 2 times a week to stay updated and align our work.

We created clear communication rules and paths between Creative Production team and the rest of the crew partaking in the exhibition to provide a clear and organized structure to easily managed all 87 people.

INSTALLATION | RESIDUE

To create a really purposeful and impactful art piece that everyone in the team could stand behind we decide to find a topic related to impermanence that all of us felt passionate about. As a result we decide to base the message of our installation on the environmental issues.

We purposely spend a lot of time on ideation and the creative process to make sure that we created an installation that would portrait a solid and bulletproof message without any contradictions related to materials and such. We wanted to work with more than just one of the human senses and we wanted to do it creatively and highly relevant at the same time.

To achieve a strong reactions from our audience we decided to play on nostalgia and sentimental emotions, we wanted use simple but effective aspects to show a possible dystopian future that might not be that far away if we don’t take action.

After 5 weeks of hustle and creative problem solving we successfully hosted an amazing event that attracted around 1000 people. We designed a dramatic, impactful and creative story that was cohesive and visible through alla spaces; from the entrance, to the exhibition hall, to the bar and the lounge area. I was extremely proud and amazed that we successfully managed to put everything together so well without any budget, resources or help.

Learnings

Despite early on deciding on a set structure, time plan and clear communication paths we hit some bumps in road during the process. This project has really taught me the value on structure, organization and management. In a production of this size alignment and mutual expectations are key for success.
The main thing I will take with me is the value of qualitative leadership, to have been able to manage a team of 87 people have been on of the most valuable experiences and learning opportunities i’ve had.
